Half-Life is now available for free on Steam

Valve has made Half-Life, one of gaming’s landmark titles, free on Steam. First released in 1998, the sci-fi action game is now available for free for its 25th anniversary.

According to Valve’s latest announcement, Half-Life will be available for free download on Steam until November 20th. In a special 25th anniversary update, Valve has applied a number of enhancements, additions and fixes to the popular game.

With the update, Half-Life will include content that was made exclusively for the CD version but was later removed. The new package includes Uplink and Half-Life: Further Data, as well as four multiplayer maps. The update also adds compatibility for next-gen monitors, interface scaling, controller and Steam network support.

There are also some fixes on the graphics side. First of all, the update provides a wider field of view, disabling texture smoothing and support for “Overbright”. There are also software rendering options for improved lighting and crisp textures on Linux.

In addition to the updated gameplay, Valve has also released a new documentary focusing on the evolution of Half-Life over the years. The film highlights Valve’s signature work since its founding in the late 90s.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary, Half-Life, which costs $105, is free. It should be noted that the game also offers two expansion packs, Opposing Force and Blue Shift.
